FOOT & MOUTH CRISIS: SLAUGHTER OF ZOO INNOCENTS; Every animal may be culled as hell plague sweeps Britain

Byline: JAMES MURRAY and NEIL McLEOD

EVERY zoo animal in Britain faces slaughter as foot and mouth rampages disastrously through the countryside.

Elephants, giraffes, rhinos, wallabies – even, incredibly, rare tigers – could be culled amid the mounting horror sweeping the nation.

Another 64 outbreaks were reported yesterday – the highest leap in one day. That brings the total to 845.

Owners of zoos and safari parks such as DUDLEY and WOBURN are near outbreaks of the disease – and live in daily fear of the Ministry call ordering them to wipe out their entire collections.

Others may have to massacre their animals because they have been forced to close and cannot afford to feed them.

As thousands of nature’s finest creatures face being shot and burned, every animal lover in the country will be appalled at the nightmare scenario.

And the anguish of all zoo owners was summed up by millionaire Damian Aspinall, who said: “I’d lay down my own life if it would stop any of my animals getting killed.”

Mr Aspinall, who inherited two Kent zoos from his father John, told the Sunday People: “We have 23 black rhino – more than in the whole of Uganda and Zambia. Those animals must not die.”

Peter Suddock, boss of Dudley Zoo, warned: “We are in a desperate fight for the animals.”

MAFF officials warned last week that ALL his 1,000 animals would have to be slaughtered if the virus spread from a farm four miles away. Staff at the zoo in the West Midlands – one of our oldest and most popular visitor attractions – were in tears of despair. Mr Suddock won an urgent meeting with zoos minister Bob Ainsworth and now thinks only cloven-hoofed animals – those that catch rather than carry the disease – would face culling.

Safari parks and farms that have lovingly nurtured rare breeds of cattle and sheep for generations also face doom.

Leading expert Dr Koen Brouwer, director of the European Association of Zoos, told the Sunday People: “Your zoos face a very threatening, scary and alarming situation.”

He said even lions and tigers, which don’t get foot and mouth, face death. But there are alternatives – a mass vaccination would ensure animals are no longer infectious. Local jabs could stop the disease spreading, or it could be left to run its non-fatal course like flu.

WOBURN Safari Park has drawn up plans to kill 1,500 animals, including elephants and giraffes, if the unthinkable happens. The Bedfordshire park is in quarantine because of an outbreak 25 miles away

It is unlikely that

It is unlikely that car criminals will try and break into your garage to get to your vehicle

4. It sounds obvious but always remember to lock your car. Often car thieves are given an easy ride by people who leave their cars open

5. Try to park your car in a secure attended car park if you are leaving it anywhere public

6. Have a car alarm fitted by a professional. This will deter a thief like nothing else

7. Invest in a steering lock and use it every time you leave your car

8. Have an immobiliser fitted which prevents the car from starting.

This PIL is not on astrologers’ charts [Mumbai]

0 Comments | Times of India, The, Jan 12, 2010 | by Thomas, Shibu

MUMBAI: This is one event which even the most astute astrologer could not have predicted. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed before the Bombay high court against astrologers, practitioners of vastu, numerology, gemology and faith healers. The PIL has sought criminal action against such persons and a ban on the popular “forecasts” on televisions and newspapers. The petition, filed by city-based organisation, Janhit Mach, has asked the courts to make it mandatory for astrologers for put a disclaimer in their advertisement, which reads: “It is not tried and tested”.

“Most of them operate deceitfully or fraudulently,” said the petitioner Bhagwanji Raiyani. “The state has failed to perform its duty to develop scientific temper and crack down on such persons who misguide people,” he added.

In his petition, Raiyani furnished a list of persons who he had approached to prove their skills, including self-proclaimed `gurus’, astrologers, palmists, and vastu, gemology and numerology practitioners. Subsequently, he also registered non-cognisable complaints against a few.

“The practice and belief in astrology and related theories is devoid of any scientific process and experimentation, based on ludicrous theories of cosmic constellations, gravitation, divination, existing and non-existing solar objects as well as illusionary and imaginary placement of zodiac signs,” stated the petition. The PIL added that astrology was supposed to be based on planetary positions but some planets, which were discovered during the last three centuries, don’t find place in the astrological chart

In fact wouldn’t it be nice to

In fact wouldn’t it be nice to have a motorcycle video, which was like a cannonball run from San Francisco to Miami or even to Key West Florida?

All this could be done on a small motorcycle such as a Honda Hurricane 600 (CBR 600), which sits lower to the ground. The whole thing could be filmed for about $25,000 and the footage could be used for the most awesome video game around (yes I have the business plan completed). It might also serve as footage for a virtual reality high-performance motorcycle training simulator. Please consider this in 2006.

Quake strikes South Pacific

0 Comments | Manila Bulletin, July 25, 2010

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) – The United States Geological Survey says an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6 has struck the South Pacific off the coasts of Tonga, Samoa and American Samoa.

There have been no reports of damage and no tsunami was triggered. The quake struck Sunday afternoon and was centered at sea 237 kilometers southwest of Apia in Samoa and 405 kilometers north of Neiafu in Tonga. It was at a depth of 41 kilometers.

Residents of Apia and Neiafu told The Associated Press that they didn’t notice it.

A magnitude 8 earthquake close to Samoa on Sept. 29 killed 34 people in American Samoa, 183 in Samoa and nine in Tonga, when tsunami waves up to 46 feet (14 meters) high crashed ashore.
